Take 6: Peter Fahey / Sneaker Pimps

Peter Fahey, founder of Sneaker Pimps, is in town this week for the NY show this Friday, June 26th. He dropped by LTD today, so we hit him up for a quick interview.

You started Sneaker Pimps in ’03. Did you think you’d still be doing it six years later?
No definitely not. I mean when I started the show in Australia, I thought I could tour it around Australia but didn’t really think it would go around the world six times. Having said that though the only reason it is still going is the sheer amount of energy myself and crew put in this.

You’ve been in 20+ countries with the show, what’s the craziest thing that has happened?
Man there are so many crazy things that have happened, being held up at gun point in a car with Stash, my wife and Craig Wetherby in Mexico City while doing a show; someone stealing all my shoes in Thailand and getting them back…the drama never stops!

You’ve done an incredible job of integrating the culture and style of the sneaker game including the music. Who has been your favorite performance?
Nas stands out the most—personally he is one of my favorite artists, so to go from a small gallery in Sydney to a sold out 3000 person venue in New York with Nas rocking the stage was truly amazing. Other notables include Slick Rick, Travis Barker and Public Enemy.

Is there a city that you’d like to do a Sneaker Pimps event in but haven’t?
Yes Moscow!

How has the economic downturn affected your business?
Well it’s really strange. I decided to take six months off last year from touring to have my first baby with my wife and right around the same time the economy started falling. So coming back in this year I was very skeptical about getting sponsorships—but so far we managed to bring on Verizon Wireless and Xbox 360 as our main sponsors—so we are having one of our best years so far. As far as affecting attendance—hat remains to be seen. We always keep out ticket price super low and provide amazing lines ups.

What else do you have your hand in these days?
We made some applications for cell phones—iskateboard.com
