Issue 16: Spotlights feat. HQTR Mexico

Our international Spotlight goes south, in a good way, Mexico City to be exact. We caught up with Ricardo, owner of HQTR, to get some info on how they do it south of the border. Kinda fly if you ask us.

Ricardo let us know some of his favorite local spots too, check out the full interview after the jump…

SO HOW’D YOU END UP WITH YOUR OWN SHOP THERE, GUYS?
I started in Mexico 15 years ago, producing my own t-shirts and selling them at the “Tianguis” (a market, very popular in Mexico). After a few years I decided to open my first shop. It was difficult to bring good brands here because companies didn’t believe Mexico was a good market for them; but after some years and with the opening of the Headquarter Store in Vancouver, these companies started to understand that we are an international company and that we are working in the right way, so thanks to this and to some people that believe in us, we are an important international store.

WAIT. WHAT’S SO COOL ABOUT YOUR SHOP ANYWAYS?
Headquater has a really amazing location. It’s located in an old building with a huge history. “La Colonia Roma” is considered a cosmopolitan place with a style that easily reminds of the classic and art nouveau style from central European cities. It’s the first time in Mexico that the street culture movement. On Colima St. you can find galleries, local designers stores, fashion and streetwear stores; it’s the mexican SoHo. Customer service. I think one of the forces that HQTR have is that our team is happy and willing to help people.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS LISTEN TO ALL DAY? PLEASE DON’T SAY GHOSTFACE.
It totally depends on the mood of the day, we like mexican rock music like Molotov or Café Tacvba but also DJ Ztrip, DJ Shadow or Unkle. We also listen to Ratatat, etc.

TELL US ABOUT SOME OF YOUR BEST SELLERS
One of our best brands is Original Fake, we really like Kaws art and it is one of our best sellers. We just started with BBC and Ice Cream, Stussy and ALIFE sells really good too.

IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU SELL?
I would really like to have Visvim, Neighborhood, Supreme, Undercover and Comme des Garçons. Maybe in the future.

AWESOME. WHAT ELSE IS UP?
This year is our 5th anniversary, so we are working in some projects, I’ll let you know when those are ready.

IF IT GETS SLOW, WHAT DO YOU DO TO PASS THE TIME?
I try to stay busy, working in all the store stuff, and looking for new projects, but when I have time , I like to travel.

SO, CAN WE COME AND HANG OUT AT THE STORE OR WHAT DUDES!?
