[CONTEST] Vans Custom Culture Program

Vans has begun the second year of its “Custom Culture Program” initiative where high school students across the United States highlight their creativity by customizing sneakers. This year’s top prize is $50,000 and the top five teams will be flown to New York to display their sneakers within a yet to be named museum.

The Vans Custom Culture contest begins registration on Friday, February 11, 2011, and will accept entries from up to 20 schools per state. High school students from art programs in five regions, including Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest and California, will have a chance to collectively tap into their creativity to craft designs for four pairs of Vans shoes, to be submitted for judgment.  All registration and submissions will take place via the Vans Custom Culture Web site atvans.com/customculture. An online gallery will exhibit the complete collection of submissions for the world to see.

After the initial judging panel selects the top 50 submissions, Vans will open the voting to consumers through an online platform, thereby narrowing down the competition to the top school in each region.

Winning schools from each region will receive a trip to New York City in June, and will participate in the final event gala held at a world-famous art museum. A Vans panel of industry experts will deliberate to select the winner of the 2011 Vans Custom Culture program and the winning school will be announced at the gala.

For official rules, program information, registration and submissions, visit the Vans Custom Culture Web site at www.vans.com/customculture. To view past and present Custom Culture designs, interact with other Custom Culture fans, and ask questions about the Vans Custom Culture program, visitwww.facebook.com/vanscustomculture.

[EVENT] José Parlá “Walls, Diaries, and Paintings” 3/3

JOSÉ PARLÁ
WALLS, DIARIES, AND PAINTINGS
MARCH 3 - APRIL 16, 2011
OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 6 - 9 PM

BRYCE WOLKOWITZ GALLERY
505 WEST 24TH STREET
NEW YORK, NY 10011

Walls, Diaries, and Paintings features fifteen new paintings, that chronicle Parlá’s exploration of the diverse places and cultures he has traversed. From Istanbul to Havana, from Tokyo to New York, the colors and textures of the neighborhoods and alleyways have found a forceful and moving resolution in Parlá’s works that are both inspirational and revealing.

Parlá’s work shows that words, signs, and marks come to mean more, over time, in this symphony of diversity, both incongruous and in harmony, that surrounds our contemporary life. His practice originated in graffiti’s experimental and collaborative approaches during the eighties. Although he has come to identify with and reflect on the compositions of Abstract Expressionism, particularly Jackson Pollock and the later incarnations of Cy Twombly, as well as the German New Symbolist works of Anselm Kiefer, he transcends these antecedents by making altogether singular expressions that are part theater, part language, and part archaeology.

It is however, Parlá’s early inspirations and influence that have had the deepest and most important impact on his current work. In that, beyond painting, whether academic or street, are his Latin origins, particularly Miami, where he grew up listening to Hip-Hop music and seeing the colors and sights that are specific to the architecture of that place.

A new monograph of José Parlá’s work, Walls, Diaries, and Paintings, will be available upon the exhibition’s opening. Published by Hatje Cantz, it includes essays by Isolde Brielmaier, Greg Tate, & Michael Betancourt. Click here to purchase.

[VIDEO] DJ Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito 20th Anniversary Show

Last week, at Le Poisson Rouge, DJ Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia a.k.a. Kool Bob Love threw down on the turntables, with Lord Sear hosting, for an unforgettable 20th anniversary show that was full of surprise guests. Despite my camera battery giving up on the god halfway through the show, I still managed to get great footage. Stretch, Bobbito, and Sear haven’t skipped a beat with their comedic antics throughout the course of the show, which included making remarks about the crowd consisting mostly of men, as you’ll see in the video, and even “pausing” Buckshot when he spoke of his “relationship” with Stretch & Bobbito. Rare footage from WKCR 89-Tek-9 was also shown on a projector screen that included highlights from a 1992 show with Souls of Mischief. The list of guests and performers included a superfluous amount of acts that ranged from: DJ Spinna, Kenny Dope, DJ Eclipse, DJ Riz, DJ Homicide a.k.a. Hungry Jack, DJ A-Trak, DJ Premier, The Artifacts, Buckshot, Rock (Heltah Skeltah), Masta Ace, Raekwon, Masta Killah, The Beatnuts, Pain in da Ass (Jay-Z skits), Nice & Smooth, and Natural Elements. Much respect to Stretch, Bobbito, and Sear for an amazing night of Hip-Hop. Check out the video below for a highlight reel of the evening.

*Respect to DJ Teddy Ruck-Spin & Polar Bear Pierre for the blends!

Also, Fool’s Gold Record’s very own Dust La Rock designed shirts for the anniversary that were sold during the show. If you happened to miss out, keep an eye on the Fool’s Gold website for their availability.
