The young homie Nigel Sylvester just dropped a new video with G-Shock titled 1987. Not your typical BMX video, yes he’ll have haters, but that’s what happens when you’re doing it like this kid. Shot on phantom cams to capture that super slo-mo, peep it and let us know what you think. Press release is below.
“1987″ by Casio G-Shock, is an urban retro-style video shot on the streets of New York City, the home of BMX icon Nigel Sylvester. The video, titled 1987 the year Nigel was born, celebrates a collaborative timepiece between Casio G-Shock and Nigel. As an adult, Nigel looks back on his year of birth as a time of great creative freedom and experimentation. The film was created to capture that spirit.
The cinematography takes reference from classic arcade games. The sound design draws spirit from the associated 16 bit soundtracks that emanated from the computers of that time. The graphic approach pays homage to Casio.
“In planning the filming of “1987,” I was able to spend time with Nigel talking about his approach to riding, art and life,” said Director Wonford St.James. “Nigel is an incredibly creative individual, something that is clearly apparent in his riding and lifestyle. I drew inspiration for the film from Nigel’s thoughts on the environment around him, and how it has shaped him as a person and an athlete. Nigel is a proud New Yorker.”
Nigel demonstrates the importance of timing while performing tricks wearing the G-Shock GD100NS-7. The stark white band and contrasting black face features the BMX pro’s signature emblazoned in red and a graphic treatment of “1987″ on the band. Keeping true to Nigel’s need for a tough and durable watch that can also be worn as a fashion accessory, the GD100NS-7 is Shock Resistant and 200M Water Resistant.
Leica interviews our man Jonathan Mannion. Great insight to who he is and what he does. Truly one of the best photographers of our generation, and of course, part of the LTD+ MGMT family. Full Interview: HERE
A Cleveland, Ohio native, Jonathan Mannion began capturing images of up-and-coming urban music superstars after working for a year with world-renowned photographer Richard Avedon. In 1996, he launched his professional career by shooting the photographs for the classic hip-hop album “Reasonable Doubt” by Jay-Z. In the years since, Jonathan’s photography has grown alongside the culture he so loves, helping to visually define an era of urban music. As DJ Quik once pointed out to him, the world sees hip-hop through his eyes. However, he is modestly circumspect about his role. “I’m just a messenger,” he observes, “and I’ve been given a talent to document an extremely important era of music history. I have a love for hip-hop that goes back to when I was a teenager, and I feel blessed to have had the chance to shoot the artists I’ve worked with. I’ve had the opportunity to grow with them and the photos I’ve shot over the years have become visual bullet points of their creative evolution and mine.”

Kat Popiel and Sam Kim are releasing the kraken again with the Fall edition of their artisan food and art show Something I Ate. The food and art serve as a platform for the creative community to converge and exchange brilliance. The indomitable, immovable, and often innocuous Jose R. Mejia was tapped by the secret society of Food Millennialists for hosting duties.
Creative minds converge for this event with food being the principle medium. Presented at ACME Studio in Williamsburg, artists will document 7 days of their personal eating experience, from zero to x “meals” a day, culminating in a collaborative menu with Skimkim Foods. The idea is that from food, we derive pleasure, satisfaction, energy and inspiration (or vice versa) and these elements, whether cognizant of them or not, ignite our creative fires. With “Something I Ate”, we intend to share various artists’ true perception of food & sustenance in everyday life.
Each artist will pinpoint a defining meal, ingredient, or experience and Sam Kim of Skimkim Foods will present her seasonal, local interpretation including drinks from SNAP Liquor & Sailor Jerry Rum. Also, enjoy a Hot Buttered Rum by A.F. Rapoport Ltd.
Music will be provided by Dances With White Girls curating a fun aural environment.
Featuring Menu Collaborations by Artists: Jillian Leedy, Sidney Lo, John D’Aponte, Kristen Wentrcek and Sam Kim from Skimkim
