Calligraphy: “artistic, stylized, or elegant handwriting or lettering” (Merriam-Webster).

Letters of Love: an expression that calligraphy should be more universal with Love being the catalyst of that message.

Wissam Shawkat is an Iraqi Calligrapher who chose his love for creativity over his civil engineering practice.  His work with calligraphy meshes a perfect blend between historical approaches and his own unique contemporary style.  Wissam has literally engineered his own style of calligraphy, an ode to truly expressing oneself.  Wissam and Jeff Staple have teamed up to bring the Letters of Love exhibit to Reed Space, which happens to be Wissam’s first visit and gallery within the United States.  Check out the video below for a recap of the opening reception and an interview with Wissam Shawkat himself.

The show showcased artwork by Neck Face, Scott Campbell, Lucien Marc-Smith, Luis Gispert and Jose Parla . Make it your business to stop by Reed Space and support the cause. Redu is a reinvestment in our future. Education informs experience and experience fuels progress, thusly it is paramount to rebuild our struggling public education system if we have any hopes of reaching our full potential as a country. Of course, a problem of this magnitude will not be solved overnight. However, if we push each other to do what we can, the results can be powerful. Jeff Staple and his team at Reed Space are attempting to do just that. Tuesday, November 11th, Reed Space will be opening its doors for a special art exhibit from which the proceeds will go to DonorsChoose.org. The art show will feature works from: Scott Campbell, Jose Parla, Neck Face, Luis Gispert and Lucien Marc-Smith. The Event Information is as follows:

Donors Choose is an online charity where patrons can literally choose to donate to individual classrooms at schools which are in need. Jeff Staple is and has been a visible supporter of Donors Choose and they are another example of dedicated individuals who are affecting change with real results.
